ALL ABOUT MACHINA MEGAWAYS™ SLOT REVIEW
Kalamba games are perhaps not a slots developer you would have heard of before now. They are based in Malta and Krakow and have a modest portfolio of 12 or so games. Since their launch in 2016 Kalamba have partnered up with Casumo, Unibet, Jackpotjoy and the Genesis Global Network to publish their slots to a growing fan base.
Now they enter the zeitgeist as they become the latest studio to release a Megaways™ game in the form of Machina, an oriental-themed video slot with some futuristic cyborg action that looks like its set in a fictional Hong-Kong type cityscape.
As you would expect this a high variance slot the good stuff all comes in the free spins round where there are plenty of opportunities to add to your cache with a progressive ticker feature.
The top advertised pay potential is 26,000x which is EPIC. But don’t hold your breath – wins over 10,000x are going to be a rarity. Let’s find out more.
Gameplay, Symbols and Pay Tables
The dirty, steamy underworld of a future-time city is the backdrop to this game. Look out for pink neon signs in dark, claustrophobic alleyways where folks are up to no good. Then turn your eyes to the reel set where you will find a standard Megaways™ six-reel format, with between 2 and 6 rows of symbols on each. This creates anything up to 46,656 ways to win on a single spin – remember the game pays out both ways for identical symbols on adjacent reels, regardless of position.
The low value symbols are the standard cards, Ace through to 9. The premium ones are five characters from the storyboard. They are a hooded boy, a female operator, a bearded man, and a gun-toting heroine. Then the main character, the cyborg who is worth 3.3x for six in a line.
Look out for the Computer Chip wild as well which can appear stacked up to 4 high. There are also bonus scatters required to trigger the free spins round.
Central to Machina in the Free Spins bonus or HYPER BONUS FEATURE. To trigger this you will need to land three or more bonus scatters on the same spin. You are rewarded as follows:
3 scatters = 10 free spins
4 scatters = 12 free spins
5 scatters = 15 free spins
6 scatters = 18 free spins
Being Megaways™ there are additional features in the bonus round that up the ante. As you land wild symbols, a meter to the right of the reel set fills up. Once full an additional two free spins are added to the cache.
At the same time as extra spins are added so too does every instance of the lowest value premium symbol transform into the highest paying which is the cyborg.
So … keep filling the meter and more spins are added and more top value cyborgs appear on the reels, creating more chances of big wins.
It is possible to transform ALL FOUR of the human symbols into Cyborgs and create an EPIC enhanced reel set.
Buy In – There is also a buy-in option for the Hyper Bonus feature. Here you can purchase a free spins round with up to 18 free plays (expensive at 337x your stake).
Game developers are looking at ways of adding further features to Megaways™ to gild the model. One way is by adding fixed jackpots – we saw that with WMS’ Battleship Direct Hit! – and so set have it here too.
There are 3 jackpots in this game – Silver, Gold and Platinum – worth 20x, 50x and 1,000x your stake. To trigger these you need to land 10, 12 or 16 cyborgs on the reels simultaneously in ONE SPIN.
It’s tough to land any of these but you are helped in the free spins round of course when you transform more and more symbols into Cyborgs!
The Slot Buzz Verdict
The question for Megaways™ developers in 2019 is going to be ‘how do we make this slot stand out from the rest?’. With the prolific rate of licensing for the BTG game engine there are going to be many new releases every month and there is risk of market saturation. So it’s great to see that with their first attempt Kalamba have done a pretty good job of making an engaging slot that, whilst not unique, at least uses some clever mechanics to spice up a familiar recipe. There is lots of potential here and the cyborg-studded bonus round is sure to produce a raft of great big win videos. Highly recommended!
