About Big Bad Wolf Xmas Special
The original Big Bad Wolf is a game that put Quickspin on the map back in the early 2010s. It showcases their talent for beautifully illustrated slot games, clever features woven into the game narratives, and compelling gameplay. The reel set and backdrop will be familiar to anyone who has played the original slot, though in our Christmas version everything is covered in a sprinkling on snow, and fairy lights line the sides of the reels.
Once again, it’s all about the pigs and the wolf who drive the main features. You’ll need at least three identical symbols on a payline for triggering wins, and every winning combo triggers the swooping reels feature, blowing away the winning icons and adding new ones in to replace them. The minimum stake to start playing is 25p.
RTP, Variance and Top Payout
The Xmas edition of Big Bad Wolf uses the same maths model and game engine as the original, so the variance is set at a medium level and should be appealing to most players. The max win available is a fairly modes 1,225x which can be triggered in the free spins round with the help of the 2x multiplier. The RTP is set to a very decent 97.3% which was another feature of the original game that made it popular – it makes it onto many lists of the best high RTP slots of all time.
Symbols and Paytable
The reels are decked with familiar symbols too. The low value icons are represented by simple playing cards, 10 through to Ace, that deliver from 3x to 4x the bet for five of a kind. The Stuffed Pig, and three little Pigs, represent the premium symbols, with the Pig that lives in a house of straw paying the most, at 12x bet for the maximum combination of five in a line. His friends will get you from 8x to 10x bet.
Look out as well for the Beehive Wild which delivers 40x stake for five of a kind and also substitutes for all regular icons to form wins, and the Wolf (this time wearing a Santa’s hat of course) which is the Scatter that triggers the Free Spins feature.
And finally, in the free spins round be ready for the moon Scatter which triggers the Blowing Down the House feature where more spins and multipliers boost your wins.
Gameplay and Features
A total of 4 additional features are on the offer in the Big Bad Wolf Christmas Edition video slot, including swooping reels, Pigs Turn Wild, the Free Spins feature, and the Blowing Down the House feature. Here is how they all work:
Swooping Reels Feature
Relatively new at the time of the original, Swooping Reels, otherwise known as Cascading Wins, is triggered after any winning spin. Winning symbols are blown away by the Wolf, and new icons will appear on the reels, filling the spaced left behind and creating possibilities for new winning combinations. This continues until no more wins are triggered.
Pigs Turn Wild Feature
Swooping reels work in tandem with the Pigs Turn Wild feature. Every time you land double successive wins, one of the Pigs will becomes Wild, and remains so until you land a non-winning spin. Four consecutive wins will get you 2 Pig Wilds, while six successive wins turn all three Pigs into Wilds. After a non-winning spin, Pigs return to being regular premium symbols. In each case of course, this boosts your chances of landing any winning combo.
Free Spins Feature
Land three or more Wolf Scatters on the reels and you will trigger the Free Spins feature. The Wolf will blow down the straw house and the Pig will move in with his brother in the wooden house. Here you start with 10 spins. It is possible to retrigger the feature by landing three more scatters. The Pigs Turn Wild feature is also active during free spins rounds.
Blowing Down the House Feature
During free spins, Moon Scatters appear on the reels, which are required for triggering the Blowing Down the House feature. Moon Scatters will only appear on reel 5. Collect three or more of them and the Wolf will blow down the wooden house, making the two Pigs run to their brother in the brick house and granting 2 more spins. If you can get a further 3 scatters, another 2 spins are added as well as another 2x multiplier.
The Xmas version of this Quickspin classic is exactly the same as the original bar the aesthetic changes – the maths model, the gameplay and the features are all identical. But that’s no big issue for us because Big Bad Wolf is a great slot and it has stood the test of time well. It lacks the heavy weight punch of modern high variance slots with huge potential, but that will be no big deal for most punters. As we move towards Xmas the pile of festive slots ready for review stacks up, we fully expect this to rank as one of the best in the final reckoning.
