Gameplay, Symbols and Pay Tables
Thor’s Lightning is set in the snow mountaintops of a mythical Nordic land where ancient rocks are strewn around the ground and hang in the air by magic. The reel set here is 7×7, a grid system on which you must form clusters of five or more identical adjacent symbols to create wins.
The game uses the avalanche wins mechanic, so when winning clusters are created, all the symbols in the cluster are removed and new ones drop in to replace them. This continues until no more winning clusters appear.
There are four low value runestone symbols of blue, green, orange and yellow, and four high value carved symbols of a tiger, a bird, a tree and Thor’s hammer, the highest-value symbol of all, paying out 25x for a cluster of 40.
Look out as well for the wild which substitutes for all other symbols and looks like a gold Thor mask.
Features and Bonuses
Thor’s Lightning
Thor’s lightning bolts and hammers are used as a dramatic tool to trigger additional features in the base game. Here, Thor appears at the foot of the screen and fires a bolt across the reels to remove all low value symbols, or turn random symbols into wilds of the same type.
Thor’s Hammer
Look out for Thor hurling his hammer across the screen to remove rows of symbols or nudge reels or rows to create wins.
Thor’s Free Spins
Central to the game, and your key to setting up anything like an epic win, is the Free Spins feature. Here, a really cool mechanic is used to unlock the bonus.
In the center of the reel grid is a 3×3 block of stones (9 in total) which must be removed to trigger free spins. To break this up you will need to land winning clusters adjacent to each one. If you can break every one of the 9 blocks off in the same win sequence (remember you have the avalanche wins mechanic to help here) then one of two free spins rounds will be triggered:
Valhalla Free Spins – Takes place on a new and completely blank reel set. Now only golden shield symbols are in play. When they land after each spin they lock in place. At the end of the round, ALL shields reveal multiplier values that are added up and applied in total to your stake to give you a win.
Muspell Free Spins – Takes place on a new, enhanced reel set where all low value symbols are removed. During the free spins two additional features are in play. Lava Flows create identical symbols in adjacent positions to guarantee a win and Lava Showers take out one type of symbol, add one, or add wilds.

Thor’s Lightning is a quality slot game from Red Tiger which looks really spectacular. The medium variance means it will pay out fairly regularly though we should point out that we rarely managed to break the middle section to trigger the free spins during our review play. Yes, it’s definitely a tough one to crack that free spins round. However, the gameplay, and Thor’s lightning and hammer features really spice up the action in the base game anyway and this is definitely a slot to have a crack at.
