ALL ABOUT HYPERNOVA MEGAWAYS™ SLOT
From the deluge of Megaways™ slots in 2019 it’s sometimes been hard to pick out real quality. Whilst Big Time Gaming were careful with their crown jewels to begin with and we all waited impatiently for new releases like Extra Chilli when they came around, now you can’t move for expanding reels, multipliers and free spins. And in the rush to get the next game on the market, some game developers have simply forgotten the importance of originality. Bonanza clones aplenty, but little of the spirt of the early glory days of BTG.
So, some trepidation as we open Hypernova Megaways™ from Reelplay, who take advantage of their partnership with Relax Gaming to license the famous game engine for their own new release. Will this Australian developer have something new to bring to the table or are we looking at another standard generic Megaways™ slot?
Well, to be fair, whilst Reelplay have stuck with the six reel, 117,649 ways to win format, they have made the very bold move of removing the free spins round and replacing it with a jackpot feature. It’s fresh for sure, but at the same time, it’s removed one of the highlights and big win drivers that made Megaways™ so great in the first place. So it won’t please everyone.
Let’s find out more.
Hypernova Megaways™ Gameplay, Symbols and Pay Tables
One of the first things to say about Hypernova is that it looks great – the reels float against a backdrop of deep space with swirling blue and orange supernovas and galaxies to left and right. The reels themselves are defined by neon blue lines, with the usual expansion of rows from two to seven to create a 117,649 max ways to win game. The 4×1 reel set above the main reels is also present.
The low value symbols on the reels are the 9 through to Ace, whilst the high value symbols are four gemstones – sapphires, rubies, jades and diamonds. The diamonds are worth 100x for six on a payline. There is also a wild which appears only in the top 4×1 reel set.
Hypernova Megaways™ Features
As with most Megaways™ slots, this is a game that uses the cascading wins mechanic – that means for every winning spin, winning symbols are removed and replaced with new ones. If more winlines are created, so the process repeats until there are no more wins.
Elsewhere, look out for the supernova scatter symbol which comes with a cash prize value on it. If you land six or more of these in one spin you will trigger the Jackpot Respin feature, which is Reelplay’s alternative to the usual Megaways™ free spins round.
Now, some may be disappointed to lose the free spins, but the Jackpot Spins feature is a good alternative, though with less win potential. You have 3 spins where ALL the scatters are held in place. If after a spin, more scatters appear, then they too are held and your respins reset to 3 again. The process continues until no more scatters land OR the whole grid is filled with scatters.
At the end of the jackpot feature, ALL your scatter values are added together to give your total prize value.
NOTE: Scatters are worth between 1x and 100x OR a fixed jackpot value of up to 2,000x.
THE SLOT BUZZ VERDICT
Hypernova is a good slot game. It’s very pleasing on the eye and the cascading wins mechanic keeps the action rolling nicely in the base game. Whether the Jackpot Spins feature is an adequate replacement for free spins will split opinion. Whatever your view on that, you won’t be put off by the decent win potential of over 8,000x on offer here. And to be honest, anything that breaks from the tried and trusted Megaways™ format that you can experience in numerous other slots is a good move in our book.
