ABOUT QUETZALCOATL’S TRIAL SLOT
Quetzalcoatl is the name of a fictional Aztec deity, a feathered serpent who was the god of wind and patron of priests. Like the Sphinx, Cerberus, and Kraken, he is a worthy adversary for any slots player prepared to take on this high risk game. When Thunderkick revealed earlier in 2020 that they would be launching a series of volatile games, we were intrigued. After all, this is the studio that gave us Pink Elephants and Flame Busters. In reality, the Beat the Beast series has been lackluster, with low top rewards and simple, yet engaging gameplay. This game has a strong graphical layout and all the action is focused on the free spins round with 5 levels to finish, where collecting special wilds modifies the paytable in favor of higher wins. Let’s learn more.
SYMBOLS AND GRAPHICS
An Aztec temple scene frames the 5×3 reel set, as usual with Thunderkick’s artwork. The game has a nice magical orange and neon lighting that adds to the ambience. The reels have low value cards (10-Ace) and premiums that are traditional Aztec symbols. A cup, an axe, a statue, and a serpent’s head. The serpent pays 250x for five on a payline. The Quetzalcoatl Emblem is a beautiful gold motif that acts as both a Wild and Scatter. It’s vital for increasing base game wins and activating the bonus round.
RTP, VARIANCE, AND PAYOUTS OF QUETZALCOATL TRIAL SLOT
Quetzalcoatl’s Trial, like the rest of the Beat the Beast series, is a high variance game. It features a 5,555x top payout and starts at 10p each spin. The RTP is 96.16 percent, which is typical for Thunderkick. In terms of regular win sequences, anticipate them to be few and far between, but when they do arrive, they may be significant.
GAMEPLAY AND FEATURES
These are free spins only. To win in the standard game, you need to land 2 or 3 identical premiums or low value symbols on a payline. Three or more Scatters trigger the free spins. You get 10 spins and a 2, 20, or 200x win.
The bonus round has 5 levels. The Wild Meters at the top of the reel set must be filled with 5 special green wild symbols to advance. When you do, all low-value symbols in the paytable become high-value symbols, improving your chances of winning. If you reach the end of the wild meter, all mid-value symbols become the top-paying symbol.
NOTE: Completing a level adds 2 spins to your total. During the bonus round, 3 or more scatters add 10 extra spins.
OUR VERDICT
This is a decent slot games with a solid bonus round and limited potential. The issue for us is that it feels very similar to the others in the Beat the Beast series and doesn’t include any new surprises. It’s a shame because the idea of a series of high variance slots got us pretty excited when it was first announced. It’s a shame because the idea of a high variance slot series had us thrilled. You’ll want to give it a few spins if you’ve played the others, but we’re moving on quickly.
