ALL ABOUT RISE OF THE MOUNTAIN KING SLOT
For NextGen’s first release of 2020 and in fact their first since late summer 2019, this Australian outfit have returned to the Norse and Mythological themes that they tapped into in their previous high variance title, Pillars of Asgard. They have also licensed the dramatic and atmospheric orchestral piece, In The Hall of the Mountain King, composed by Edvard Grieg and used in an Ibsen play in the 19thCentury. A little pretentious?! Perhaps. But if you’re going to go large on the soundtrack you better match it up with some heavy hitting slot play and epic artwork – and on that front NextGen have certainly delivered. This is a fantastic-looking slot that commands your attention through beautiful graphics and engaging gameplay that brings in plenty of wilds, high value multipliers and free spins. It’s also one hell of a high variance ride too – this is no holds barred high risk slot play with a whacking-great 50,000x top payout. Without question Rise of the Mountain King slot is one of the highlights of Q1 2020. Game on!
GAME SET-UP, SYMBOLS AND GRAPHICS
The game takes place against a backdrop of a misty mountain scene, bathed in feint purple light under a full moon, with a stairway leading upwards towards a distant castle. There are 5 reels and 3 rows on the floating, transparent reel set, and at all times 30 fixed paylines are in play.
The low value symbols are the cards, 9 through to Ace. The high value symbols are an axe, a shield, a troll and a damsel. The latter is the highest paying of the standard icons at 13.3x for five on a payline. There are also wild symbols, represented by The Mountain King himself. He subs for all others and is worth 16.66x for five on a payline. Finally, the scatter is represented by a red gemstone and is required to set up the free spins round.
RISE OF THE MOUNTAIN KING RTP, VARIANCE AND PAYOUTS
This is one of NextGen’s high variance games and it really is a beast to take on. That means for casual gamers it’s probably one to be avoided. You’ll need a big balance to start and think carefully about how much you can afford to stake per spin because it can drive down your bankroll in no time before shelling out any wins. The game has a reasonable 96.31% RTP, and of course an enormous top advertised payout of 50,000x. Let’s be clear, this slot has all the making of a classic that will produce some epic win videos alongside many, many frustrating game sessions.
GAMEPLAY AND FEATURES
There are three key features to watch out for in Rise of the Mountain King. They work as follows:
The Mountain King Wild is all important throughout the game. Not only does he sub-in to create wins but he can also trigger re-spins when he lands three of more times simultaneously on the reels. Before the re-spin, any scatters that have landed are turned into wilds too. All wilds are then locked in place for the re-spin. If more wilds land then the process repeats until no more wilds land or a full screen of wilds is displayed.
There is also a Gamble Feature in the base game. Here after any win you get to choose the suit or the color of a hidden playing card. A correct guess will double (color) or quadruple (suit) the value of your win. A wrong guess and you lose the lot.
Rise of the Multiplier
This is the main event in the game. You’ll need to land three or more scatters to trigger it. You get 8, 9 or 10 spins for 3, 4 or 5 scatters. Multipliers play an important part. The value of these starts at 5x, displayed in a meter above the reels. Additional scatters that land on the reels during the game each add a further spin to your total. Every additional THREE scatters increase the wild multipliers to 10x, 15x, 25x, 50x and then 100x. Now, whenever a wild is part of a winline, then the current multiplier value is applied to the win.
You don’t need to be a slots fanatic to see where this is all heading. If you can drive that multiplier up to 100x, and throw in some extra spins, AND some King’s Respin events too, then this bonus round is going to get very, very epic.
It’s been a while since NextGen hit us with a new release but it’s been worth the wait. Rise of the Mountain King delivers on all fronts. It’s beautiful artwork and stunning soundtrack compliment some excellent gameplay. In the context of an extremely competitive high variance market NextGen shoot for the stars and here they have scored an absolute hit. This game could well go down as a classic and will no doubt find a place in many of the end of year top 50s. Top stuff.
