ALL ABOUT JOHN HUNTER AND THE AZTEC TREASURE SLOT
Aztec Treasure is not the first outing for Pragmatic Play’s cool hero, John Hunter (a Rich Wilde / Indiana Jones type character). In 2018 we saw him hunting for treasures in the ‘Book-of’ type game, Da Vinci Treasures. Now he’s back in an Aztec-themed game that looks like a hundred other slots we can think of, but featuring this year’s big trend in slots, an expanding reels game format. Except, rather than sign up to Big Time Gaming’s all-conquering Megaways™ project, Pragmatic Play have decided they can build their own version. The reels on Aztec Treasure do not expand to quite the epic size of a Bonanza game, but they can still produce up to 7,776 ways to win when all six rows are visible on all five lines.
Aside from the expanding reels, this is actually a pretty straightforward slot with few features. It’s all about hitting free spins and adding multipliers to drive your wins up. It also comes with a harshly high variance. So be ready to spend some bankroll before you tame this one.
Gameplay, Symbols, and Pay Tables
Aztec Treasure is a pretty slot, using the usual array of Aztec imagery and Indiana Jones-type iconography to grab your attention. The action appears to take place in a long-lost temple of sorts with the reels set against a gold-infused scene of decaying, overgrown stone steps and weird carvings. The low value symbols on the reel set are the cards, Jack through to Ace. The higher value symbols are John Hunter’s Hat, his Whip, the snake, the panther, the a bird, and the main character himself. Hunter is the highest-paying symbol and worth 4x for five on a payline.
Look out as well for the mask which represents the wild symbol and substitutes for all others except for the scatter.
John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure Features
Aztec Treasure comes down to one simple feature – free spins with mutlipliers. And to unlock these you will need to land three or more bonus scatters anywhere on the reels. To make things a little more interesting, after you land your scatters a bonus wheel spins to decide how many you get. This works as follows:
3 Scatters: 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 free spins
4 Scatters: 10, 15, 20, or 25 free spins
5 Scatters: 15,,20 or 25 free spins
Your winnings will be driven up by a random multiplier which is applied to every spin. The multiplier will be 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x or 10x. The multiplier value will appear above the reel set at the top of the screen. Any additional bonus scatters landed during the free spins round will get you more free spins during which the multiplier that was active when they were triggered will apply throughout.
It it possible to hit a 9,000x top payout with a 10x multiplier in Aztec Treasure.
THE SLOT BUZZ VERDICT
Aztec Treasure is a very simple slot that has used the expanding reels mechanic to try to add a bit of spice. To be honest, it doesn’t really add much to the gameplay because this game is really all about the free spins round and hitting re-triggers with high-value multipliers. One for the hardcore high variance fans who like chasing the big wins in a no-frills environment.
